چکیده

In this paper a recently developed method is used to calculate the main effects of excluded volume on the distribution of ions around a charged central sphere in thermal equilibrium. The authom find significant corrections to the results of the conventional GouyChapman theory when the electrostatic energy due to the charge ofthe sphere is large compared with the thermal e n q y . The concemation shows a distinct saturation effect, while at the surface of the sphere the known saturation of the potential is lifted. Furthermore, the effect of excluded volume is found to be strongly dominated by the excluded volume of ions with a charge opposite to the charge of the sphere.

Distribution of ions around a charged sphere

Using a new method of calculating the effects of excluded volume, the authors evaluate the distribution of counterions around a charged sphere in thermal equilibrium. In regions of high concentration a saturation of the ion density is found, which is absent in the more conventional Gouy-Chapman model. At the same time the saturation effect of the potential (a property of the Gouy-Chapman model)...

Incorporation of excluded-volume correlations into Poisson-Boltzmann theory.

We investigate the effect of excluded-volume interactions on the electrolyte distribution around a charged macroion. First, we introduce a criterion for determining when hard-core effects should be taken into account beyond standard mean-field Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) theory. Next, we demonstrate that several commonly proposed local-density-functional approaches for excluded-volume interactions c...

Density-functional theory for the structures and thermodynamic properties of highly asymmetric electrolyte and neutral component mixtures.

Density-functional theory (DFT) is applied to investigate the structural and thermodynamic properties of concentrated electrolyte and neutral component mixtures that are highly asymmetric in terms of both size and charge mimicking a crowded cellular environment. The excess Helmholtz energy functional is derived from a modified fundamental measure theory for the hard-sphere repulsion and a quadr...

Decrease of permittivity of an electrolyte solution near a charged surface due to saturation and excluded volume effects.

The dipole moment of a water molecule in liquid water differs from that of an isolated one because each molecule is further polarized by the electric field of its neighbours. In this work a formula for the spatial dependence of the relative permittivity of an electrolyte near a highly charged surface is obtained in which the mutual influence of the water molecules is taken into account by means...

Excluded volume effect of counterions and water dipoles near a highly charged surface due to a rotationally averaged Boltzmann factor for water dipoles.

Water ordering near a negatively charged electrode is one of the decisive factors determining the interactions of an electrode with the surrounding electrolyte solution or tissue. In this work, the generalized Langevin-Bikerman model (Gongadze-Iglič model) taking into account the cavity field and the excluded volume principle is used to calculate the space dependency of ions and water number de...
